Tech4All and The Worshipful Company of Engineers Tech4All have announced the winners of the Innovation For All Award 2026.
The £20,000 prize goes to Freddy Sarathchandra and Lea Jung, co-founders of enstic (GB) Ltd, for their work on automated acoustic mosquito monitoring.
Mosquitoes are often described as the deadliest animals on the planet, not because of claws or venom, but because of the diseases they transmit. Mosquito-borne diseases including malaria, dengue, Zika and yellow fever cause more than 700,000 deaths each year, while around half the world’s population is at risk from dengue alone. There are roughly 3,500 known mosquito species, but only about 3% transmit disease to humans.
Knowing which mosquitoes are present, where and when, is therefore one of the most powerful tools available to public health teams. But current surveillance often relies on physical traps, expert scientists and laboratory capacity far from the field, meaning results can arrive days or weeks after they were most useful.
enstic was founded to close this gap. By combining engineering and entomology, the company has developed a field-ready device family, including an acoustic insect monitor a portable microscope, to detect mosquitoes automatically, confirm species and turn wing-beat acoustics – the familiar mosquito buzz – into decision-ready data in near real time.
With the award’s support, enstic will run two co-development deployments with local public-health partners: one in Kenya, focused on malaria-transmitting mosquitoes, and one in Sri Lanka, focused on dengue-transmitting species. Their ambition is to cut the time from sampling to risk identification from weeks to under 24 hours. The same platform could also support pollinator monitoring, agricultural pest management and biodiversity surveillance.
